Interactive OR Basin Map Riverkeeper.png

In October 2024, Ottawa Riverkeeper released this interactive map and dashboard. Here are some tips to get you started:
- When opened in Map Viewer Classic (top right corner) Options to type in your address so you can highlight the Hydro generating stations, the 13 principal Reservoirs, and the tributaries of the Ottawa River Watershed near your location

- Another great option is to click on the 'Content' icon in the middle. You can then “de-select” some map icons (major dams, hydro stations, all dams, etc.) For example, you can choose to only look at the Reservoirs by
de-selecting the other icons in the list.

- You can zoom in and click on the corresponding separate icon, or any highlighted area for additional data including reservoir capacity, location, Hydro Generation Station MW size, location, year built, and more.

ORFA's efforts are focused on...

  • Lowering dam head ponds to their absolute physical minimums annually before the freshet begins

  • Lowering reservoir levels to their absolute physical minimums before the freshet begins, keeping in mind municipal infrastructure requirements for water intake and sewage as well as some environmental constraints with regards to fisheries

  • Endorsing the Clarence-Rockland request to the Federal Government for a third-party study on the management of water (including Plan 2014) in the Ottawa River

  • Getting both provincial authorities to enforce their legislative authorities over Dam operators by: demanding that water management plans be created, including directives to dramatically lower dam head ponds to protect riparian owners and municipalities
    - lowering reservoir levels to their absolute physical limits and
ensuring Dam operators adhere to their water management plan directives

While we know that climate change is one factor contributing to flooding, we have identified these and other  factors which are not related to climate change and that can be addressed by corporations and by our governments
